Vance is one of the four founding members of the Firm. He grew up in Milwaukee. Vance received his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College in 1974, where he graduated with honors. He received his law degree from Northwestern University, cum laude, in 1977. Vance's practice has included significant work, both domestically and internationally, in corporate mergers and acquisitions, real estate, antitrust and distribution issues, corporate tax, securities, white collar criminal defense, and estate and tax planning, as well as litigation in all of the foregoing. Vance has represented shareholders and partners in the resolution of intra enterprise management disputes, resolving most of them without litigation. His corporate transactions have taken a multi-disciplinary approach in which Vance and his team have handled all of the aspects of the transactions, including securities, tax, real estate, environmental, labor, corporate, employee benefits and other specialized areas of law. Vance has also represented borrowers, lenders and developers in various real estate transactions and related litigation, including the financing of large office and warehouse developments and the restructuring of construction and permanent loans for commercial, industrial and office buildings. Vance has also successfully represented lenders and landlords in bankruptcy litigation. Vance has been involved in all stages of litigation and has tried cases and argued appeals. His cases have ranged from complex securities cases to a case in which he successfully proved that a man had murdered his wife, resulting in her children receiving the insurance proceeds that otherwise would have gone to the murderer. Vance has spoken to a wide variety of groups on several topics, including antitrust, tax, estate planning, business succession planning and law firm management. He has a keen interest in the use of computers both in the office and home. In addition to admission before the Illinois courts and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Vance has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Tax Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Seventh Circuits, and is a member of the trial bar of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Vance is married and has a daughter and a son. His hobbies include computers and various electronics projects. |
